The SAT Scoring System: Everything You Need to Know

7 min read

The SAT scoring system can seem complex at first, but understanding how it works is crucial for maximizing your score. This guide explains the entire process from raw scores to final results.

The SAT Scoring Process: Step by Step

When you complete the SAT, your answers go through several stages:

Step 1: Raw Score Calculation

  • No penalty for wrong answers: You only earn points for correct answers.
  • Omitted questions: Zero points.
  • All questions equal: Every question is worth one raw point.

Step 2: Test Scores (10-40 Scale)

Raw scores are converted to test scores using official equating tables that vary slightly by test date.

Step 3: Section Scores (200-800)

EBRW: (Reading Test Score + Writing Test Score) × 10

Math: Raw score directly converted to 200-800 scale.

Score Equating: Why It Matters

Not all SAT tests are created equal. To ensure fairness, the College Board uses equating. A slightly harder test might have a more generous conversion table, while an easier test has a stricter one.

Understanding the Score Curve

The SAT is not curved based on how other students perform. Your score is determined solely by your correct answers and the predetermined equating table.

Calculate Your SAT Score

Now that you understand the system, convert your practice test raw scores into estimated scaled scores.
